WASHINGTON —The cost of crestor at a Walgreens pharmacy jumped 15% over the past year as a result of the government’s $4.8 billion acquisition of Walgreens in May of the consumer savings program.
“It is not a surprising story,” said Susan B. Kastelein, an executive director at the Consumer Health Care Fraud and Abuse Prevention Taskforce, a Washington, D. C., advocacy group.
The prescription drug was purchased by Walgreens in April, along with $15 million in cash, according to the CFCA and Health & Human Services Office of Inspector General. The sale occurred in April and April 30, when it was reported that several health insurance companies had been involved in the purchase.
The company said that the cost was “exceeding” when it paid out more than $1.5 million to individuals who had received treatment with the drug and a portion of the prescription, which was spent on other drugs.
“This was a good thing for us,” said Kastelein, noting that the health insurance companies were aware of the drug purchase and had taken steps to avoid the risk.
The government said it did not have the required documentation to prove the purchase, but did point out that the health insurance company had not disclosed the amount of the drug purchase price. In fact, the drug had been disclosed, Kastelein said, and that the amount of the drug purchase price was listed in a “black box” document.
“The public health community has been watching the price gouging at a time when the public is in very critical need of this drug,” said the CFCA. “I urge all of our stakeholders to do the right thing to help the public, and I commend the government for doing this.”
The cost of the drug, according to the CFCA, jumped 15% to $4.8 million.
The drug was sold at $2.7 million, the price of which was $2,800 per year.
The drug’s price increased 14% to $5.2 million in April, according to the CFCA. That was 15% higher than the price on April 30, when it was reported that one of the company’s drugs had been recalled.
A spokeswoman for the Walgreens drug program said the company did not know the cost of the drug or its price.
“We are committed to providing the most affordable and effective prescription care we can,” said the spokeswoman.
The Walgreens program also includes a $15,000 discount card that allows consumers to purchase the drug. This discount is available through various outlets, including those on the Internet.
The program has not yet been finalized. The CFCA and Health & Human Services Office of Inspector General said it remains unclear whether the drug has been approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration.
The drug, which costs $1.50 a day for three months, had $15.2 million in revenue in August.
The price of the drug jumped 16% to $3.75 in April.
“These are not a few examples of the price gouging,” said B. Ray McKinnell, an analyst with the National Community Pharmacists Association, a group that represents retail pharmacies, in a statement released by the CFCA. “These are not isolated cases, and we understand the financial burden that drug manufacturers face.”
The CFCA said that the price of the drug went up in August to $3.75 per tablet, compared to the price on April 30, which was $3.75 a day.
“For those who are shopping, this is a huge blow to their wallet,” said McKinnell.
In addition to the price increase, the Walgreens drug program also includes a $2.75 a month discount card for the manufacturer. That discount card is available through several pharmacies.
