Crestor® (rosuvastatin) is a medication used to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is prescribed to patients with high cholesterol who are at a risk of getting several heart problems. Patients taking Rosuvastatin should exercise caution when taking Crestor, as it can cause drowsiness. Patients with a history of heart problems may also be at increased risk for this condition. Rosuvastatin is not recommended for patients with a family history of these conditions.
Crestor® is a generic version of Lipitor® (atorvastatin). It is a newer medication with a different mechanism of action called statin therapy. It lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol by lowering the "bad" cholesterol levels in your arteries. Crestor® is also prescribed to treat a form of hyperlipidemia called atherosclerosis. By lowering "lipid," Crestor triglycerides are found in the blood. This lowers the risk of cardiovascular events. In patients who have high cholesterol levels, statin therapy reduces the risk of heart disease. Crestor® is not recommended for patients with a family history of these conditions.
Crestor® (rosuvastatin) belongs to a group of medicines called statins. It works by reducing the production of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides in your arteries. It lowers the cholesterol levels in your blood by lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides. Rosuvastatin is a generic medicine and is not prescribed to patients with a family history of these conditions.
Crestor® and Lipitor® are different medications, but they are essentially the same medication. Crestor® lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides by reducing the production of triglycerides. Lipitor® lowers triglycerides by relaxing the stomach lining and increasing the production of bile acids. Crestor® lowers triglycerides by inhibiting the enzyme cholesterol peroxidase (a lipid stat) and by increasing cholesterol levels in the body.
For oral use, the recommended starting dose of Crestor is 10 mg once a day. The maximum daily dose of Crestor® is 80 mg per day, and the recommended starting dose is 20 mg once a day. Patients who take Crestor® may experience drowsiness, sedation, or impaired kidney function. Patients who do not take Crestor may experience drowsiness or dry mouth. Patients who take Crestor should keep taking them for at least 4 weeks at a time. To decrease the chance of developing liver disease, the dose of Crestor® may need to be reduced.
The most common side effects of Crestor are gastrointestinal upset (nausea), vomiting, headache, and diarrhea. Serious but rare side effects include sudden severe (rarely fatal) abdominal pain or swelling, dark urine, nausea, vomiting, vomiting with a light-colored stools, vomiting blood or vomit after consuming grapefruit juice, abdominal pain or swelling, dizziness, and drowsiness. Patients who experience side effects may be starting to adjust the dose of Crestor and increasing the dose until they are no longer observed. Side effects that have been reported in clinical trials include increased thirst (nausea and vomiting), dry mouth, constipation, increased appetite, weight gain, and increased cholesterol levels. The most common side effects of Lipitor are increased cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, difficulty urinating, and drowsiness. Side effects that have been observed in clinical trials include decreased sex drive, decreased sexual ability, and ejaculation disorders. Side effects that have been observed in clinical trials include blurred vision, eye pain, light sensitivity, dry mouth, fatigue, and insomnia.
Weight gain is common in patients taking Crestor®. While weight gain does not appear to be a cause of this side effect, it is an increasing risk of cardiovascular events. Patients who gain more than a few pounds in a year should have their cholesterol levels checked periodically. Patients who experience side effects must not take Crestor® and must carefully weigh the risks and benefits.
Teva Pharmaceuticals has signed a deal with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to acquire the US pharmaceutical company’s (US) rights to produce, market and distribute the drug Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium).
The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, will allow Teva to make generic Crestor in the US market and also allow it to license the US product from the company, while still being in compliance with US government regulations.
Under the terms of the deal, GSK and Teva will manufacture and sell generic versions of Crestor and other cholesterol-lowering statins, and in return, they will supply US generic Crestor, including Crestor, to the US market.
Teva is also seeking approval to market Crestor in the United States, which is part of a wider market for other statins known as ‘crestor’. This could make it more difficult for Glaxo to obtain regulatory approval.
“Teva is committed to bringing new, affordable, high-quality generic statins to the US marketplace. We believe this deal will help us continue to make affordable generic medicines accessible to all,” said Thomas Dolan, CEO of Teva Pharmaceuticals.
Teva will be entitled to a share of the US market share.

Teva currently markets the generic versions of its cholesterol-lowering statins at a price of around $5.20 per pill. The cost for a generic Crestor would range from $6.50 to $7.20.
Teva Pharmaceuticals has also signed a deal with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to market the drug in Asia, a market for which it has already generated annual sales of $3.6 billion, according to IQVIA data.
